The painting was in a poor structural condition with numerous losses of paint and ground. The damages were probably caused by the painting being kept in very damp conditions.

The painting was covered with a thick film of ingrained surface dirt and soot.

Detail before removal of the dirt and varnish layers, and treatment of the damages.

After treatment – involving cleaning, lining, filling and retouching.
