New Artist Page: Laimonis Mierins – Abstract Painter
We’ve recently added a dedicated artist page for Laimonis Mierins, a Latvian-born abstract painter whose work has become an important part of our collection at 108 Fine Art in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Mierins featured in our For the Love of Art exhibition in early 2024, shown alongside Paul Wager. Since then, we’ve had a steady stream of interest in his abstract acrylic and mixed media paintings. With several works currently available to view and purchase at the gallery, we have now created a permanent home on our website.
Born in Latvia in 1929, Mierins arrived in the UK in 1947 and went on to study at Bradford and Leeds Colleges of Art. He later taught for many years at Jacob Kramer Art School (now Leeds College of Art). His paintings reflect a lifelong exploration of colour, form, and structure — often shaped by personal experience and wider historical events.

A Collector’s Reflection – Terry Bacon on Mierins’ Work
Below is a short video featuring Terry Bacon, a long-time collector who has spent over 40 years building a personal connection with Mierins’ work. He speaks about the emotional impact of Mierins’ painting:
“A line sometimes or a swish of a brush stroke can be absolutely uplifting and magical… It’s an incredible feeling, if you just accept it for what it is — not try to turn it into something else. Just accept the feel of a painting, and then you can live with it, enjoy it. It’s life-enhancing, it really is.”
