The painting had been kept in damp conditions and suffered from the loss of paint and ground. The painting was also dented and torn in several areas. The painting had been displayed in an oval fronted picture frame, with the lighter areas having been protected from dirt and grime.
Once the flaking paint had been secured and the damaged canvas repaired, it was decide to line the canvas, to provide much needed additional support. The lost areas of paint and ground were filled with a fine surface filling material. The fillings were then textured and carved to imitate the texture of the original paint. The initial retouching were applied using finely ground pigments and tempera, with the final retouchings applied using a varnish medium and dry pigments
