A major exhibition of paintings and works on paper from 1945 – 1995
This exhibition and accompanying catalogue illustrates a representative cross section of the artists work, from his dark, brooding paintings of the late 1940’s, the richly impastoed 1950’s monochromatic paintings, through to the highly original and expressive paintings of his final decades: luminous explorations of scruffy allotments with their ramshackle huts and glistening white picket fences, alongside images of the newly emarging city with its mix of stark modern buildings and worn Victorian elegance.
Woodrow has in recent years been compared with his contemporaries Auerbach, Kossoff and Freud, his art resonating with hints of an inherited European sensibility. The art critic Philip Vann has compared Woodrow’s art with the work of two other remarkable Leeds painters, John Atkinson Grimshaw and Jacob Kramer. Indeed he refers to Woodrow’s work as “Some of the most powerfully original and expressive works of the last decades” and in an article written for Galleries Magazine wrote –
“Just as Lowry is known as the visual poet of Salford and Eardley similarly of the Gorbals, so Woodrow is now being revealed as the surely unrivalled painter of 20th century Leeds”s
